Design Inspiration from the Factory Floor

Given its rich and unique history of blending traditional craftsmanship with the latest digital production technologies, itâs no surprise designer Konstantin Grcic partnered with Mattiazzi to produce the Medici Chair. He even found inspiration for Mediciâs design on the Mattiazzi factory floor. âThe chair was inspired by the material, the machinery, and, of course, the skill and craftsmanship of the people we worked with,â Grcic says.

The designerâs approach from the start: use only three-quarter inch planks throughoutâa reminder of the beginning of the production process, when a tree trunk is cut into slices.

The result is the Medici Chairâa visible, easy-to-read structure that uniquely expresses the distinct characteristics of the wood. Itâs a comfortable seat thatâs also pleasing to the eye.
