Given its rich and unique history of blending traditional craftsmanship with the latest digital production technologies, it's no surprise designer Konstantin Grcic partnered with Mattiazzi to produce the Medici Chair. He even found inspiration for Medici's design on the Mattiazzi factory floor. "The chair was inspired by the material, the machinery, and, of course, the skill and craftsmanship of the people we worked with," Grcic says.
The designer's approach from the start: use only three-quarter inch planks throughout—a reminder of the beginning of the production process, when a tree trunk is cut into slices.
The result is the Medici Chair—a visible, easy-to-read structure that uniquely expresses the distinct characteristics of the wood. It's a comfortable seat that’s also pleasing to the eye.
