With regular care and maintenance, your Herman Miller product will provide many years of superior performance and satisfaction. To maintain quality, please follow the cleaning procedures outlined here.
The instructions for the care and maintenance of Herman Miller products are provided to you as a service. No warranty is implied since results may vary.
Polished Aluminum
For normal cleaning, apply a pre-softened paste wax to polished aluminum components following the manufacturer's instructions. In humid atmospheres near salt water, apply the wax once a month. In other areas, apply wax every three months to maintain the appearance of the aluminum.
H-Alloy Base
For normal cleaning, wash surface with a soft cloth soaked in mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive kitchen cleaners.
Plastic
For normal cleaning, wash plastic surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive kitchen cleaners.
Lyris 2 Suspension Material
For normal cleaning, vacuum material as needed using an upholstery attachment. Vacuuming picks up dust and reduces the need for professional cleaning.
Do not brush fabric or use a vacuum attachment with a rotary brush. Brushing may permanently damage the nap or change the character of the fabric.
To spot-clean fabric, immediately soak up the stain with a soft absorbent cloth. Do not dry the stain completely or it may set. The longer a stain is allowed to remain on a fabric, the more difficult it is to remove.
For water-based stains such as coffee, soft drinks, fruit juices, or milk use a water-based cleaner (specifically made for cleaning fabric) or a solution of mild (alkaline) warm soapy water (not overly soapy) applied with a damp clean cloth or sponge. Work the cleaner into a lather or foam.
Never use hot water; it will set the stain. Avoid scrubbing.
For oil-based stains such as lipstick, grease, or salad dressing use a dry cleaning solution applied with a damp clean cloth or sponge. Test the cleaning solution on a small, concealed area first. If there is no spotting, ringing, or damage to the fabric or its dyes, apply the cleaning solution to the soiled area with light, quick strokes. Begin at the outside of the stain and work toward the center, being careful not to over-saturate the fabric. K2r is also a product that can be used. See product label for complete instructions.
Do not over apply water or any liquid solution to fabric. Excessive wetting of the fabric with any liquid solution may result in permanent damage to the material.
Do not rub too vigorously or you may damage the nap of the fabric or break fibers.
Several light applications are better than one heavy application.
Soak up all remaining solution and then use another clean cloth or sponge dipped in cool water to remove any residue.
Let fabric dry thoroughly and then vacuum well before using.
If the stain resists cleaning, call a professional cleaner.
If large areas are soiled, contact a professional cleaning firm.

My kitchen is were everyone hangs out and the rolling dinette chairs we'd had since the 80's were comfortable but ugly and falling apart. My husband thought this chair was too expensive for kitchen use so I just bought one - for myself. I bought a $100 rolling task chair from a big box store for his place at the table. For several months he compared the comfort of the two chairs and the result was that my frugal husband asked for his own Setu kitchen chair for his birthday.
I have used many work chairs over the years and the Setu are the most comfortable I've ever used. When we toured the British Library they told us about their search to find chairs that were durable and comfortable no matter the size person. Their chairs are wonderful and the Setu chair feels very much like those in the British Library.
The (clawed) cat uses the chair as a step stool with no discernible impact on the mesh. The chairs look like new and I anticipate years of comfort and satisfaction.

The chair leans back the right amount so I am not too far from my desk but still supports me when I sit upright.
I often sit half cross legged in this chair and am quite comfortable.
I have never seen any significant signs of wear after 2 years in a university computer lab with near constant use and abuse.
I liked this chair enough to buy one for myself. They say you spend 90% of your life sitting, standing, or sleeping so spend your money accordingly and I think this is spending your money wisely.

In older versions of this chair there is a rod that runs across the top of the seat back. In the ones we just purchased it doesn't seem to be there. Is this intentional or is there a piece missing?

Im including a link to a short video clip that shows Setus designers, Studio 7.5, demonstrating the chair. There are quite a few helpful views of the fabric in the video.
I would also encourage other owners of the Setu to post an answer to give more first hand accounts of how Setu feels and breathes.

I have had problems with chairs before in that they tilt back with no way to control resistance, with the end result that my back is not supported as I sit. I have had to send back more than one chair because of this.
Long answer: The Setu has a spine that flexes when you lean against it, so you control how far you lean back by pushing your body weight into the back of the chair. The chair is shaped so the mesh supports your lumbar region. I think Setu is best for people who generally like to sit upright and straight, and for shorter periods of time than four hours.
If you want to control resistance manually, or sit for longer than four hours, I recommend chairs with a tilt tension control such as Sayl, Mirra 2, Aeron, or Embody. Cheers!

I am 5'1" tall and have a hard time finding chairs that aren't too "deep" in the seat area. Does this chair fit petite women well?
-Seat Depth: 15" (front of seat to the point where the suspension material starts to curve up)
-Seat Width: 18.75"
-Seat Height: 15.5"-20"
I would recommend the Small/A-size Aeron Chair if you're looking for more options and adjustments.

However, if you're looking to sit for longer, I would consider a chair with adjustable recline stops, tilt tension, and lumbar support. The Mirra 2, Aeron, Embody, Celle, and Sayl are all great choices for this. Herman Miller has a tool to help you decide which chair might be best for you:

Good luck!

Are all 3 variations of the Setu Chair base constructed of the same alloy?
Are the only differences that the Graphite variation is painted (is it powder-coated?), and that the Semi-polished variation has polished top and end flanges?
Are all 3 variations equally scratch-resistant?
The Graphite variation does have a painted powder-coated finish to provide the graphite color of the base. Whereas the Semi-Polished base has been bead blasted to provide the shiny appearance on the top and the end parts of the base.

I have a Setu chair with castors and the cast alloy base. The base is quite rough and is scratching/rubbing on my wooden cabinets and other surfaces in my office leaving marks and scratches. Do you have some sort of protective cap that can snap in the ends to protect this?
Thanks,
Matt

Could the chair be specified with either a low or high cylinder ? It will give the chair a different range of heights. If so, what are the seat height ranges for each cylinder?

I see that it is the white frame, but am not certain which seat and back material is used in the white chair shown in the product photos. I'd love the combo of frame, base and material for that one. Thanks!

If you are looking for a tilt adjustment, you may also want to consider Aeron or Mirra. Both chairs allow you to order specific tilt options to give you more control over your recline.
