Divider

Polished Aluminum

For normal cleaning, apply a pre-softened paste wax to polished aluminum components following the manufacturer's instructions. In humid atmospheres near salt water, apply the wax once a month. In other areas, apply wax every three months to maintain the appearance of the aluminum.

H-Alloy Base

For normal cleaning, wash surface with a soft cloth soaked in mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive kitchen cleaners.

Plastic

For normal cleaning, wash plastic surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive kitchen cleaners.

Lyris 2 Suspension Material

For normal cleaning, vacuum material as needed using an upholstery attachment. Vacuuming picks up dust and reduces the need for professional cleaning.
Do not brush fabric or use a vacuum attachment with a rotary brush. Brushing may permanently damage the nap or change the character of the fabric.

To spot-clean fabric, immediately soak up the stain with a soft absorbent cloth. Do not dry the stain completely or it may set. The longer a stain is allowed to remain on a fabric, the more difficult it is to remove.

For water-based stains such as coffee, soft drinks, fruit juices, or milk use a water-based cleaner (specifically made for cleaning fabric) or a solution of mild (alkaline) warm soapy water (not overly soapy) applied with a damp clean cloth or sponge. Work the cleaner into a lather or foam.
Never use hot water; it will set the stain. Avoid scrubbing.

For oil-based stains such as lipstick, grease, or salad dressing use a dry cleaning solution applied with a damp clean cloth or sponge. Test the cleaning solution on a small, concealed area first. If there is no spotting, ringing, or damage to the fabric or its dyes, apply the cleaning solution to the soiled area with light, quick strokes. Begin at the outside of the stain and work toward the center, being careful not to over-saturate the fabric. K2r is also a product that can be used. See product label for complete instructions.

Do not over apply water or any liquid solution to fabric. Excessive wetting of the fabric with any liquid solution may result in permanent damage to the material.

Do not rub too vigorously or you may damage the nap of the fabric or break fibers.
Several light applications are better than one heavy application.

Soak up all remaining solution and then use another clean cloth or sponge dipped in cool water to remove any residue.

Let fabric dry thoroughly and then vacuum well before using.

If the stain resists cleaning, call a professional cleaner.

If large areas are soiled, contact a professional cleaning firm.

wonderful chair. I just bought my 2nd one after wearing the fabric out on the old one after 8 years.
I had back problems until I purchased my first Setu chair. I love this chair and purchased a second chair after wearing out the fabric in the old one. The first chair lasted 8 years. I don't see that fabric replacement is covered in the 12 year warranty but I still replaced with the same chair.

My favorite swivel chair
I used to sell office furniture, so when I started my own business, not in furniture industry, I knew which swivel chair I wanted. As I was sitting in it for hours straight. I really recommend this chair!

delivery and customer care was unsatisfactory.
This is my second office chair from Herman Miller. It has lasted me a really long time and is made with quality and pleasing aesthetics. I am really satisfied with my product however I decided to give a 2 star to the overall experience of my purchase. I had scheduled a delivery date and time. I took the day off work to wait for the delivery. I waited all day and no one showed up. I contacted Herman Miller trough email and the lady said she had contacted the delivery and that I would be getting a call from them to set up another appointment. I never received another call or a response from the Herman Miller representative who was helping me figure out when it would be delivered. It was delivered the next day with out a confirmed delivery time.

Comfortable as the chairs in the British Library
I purchased this chair 2 years ago - to use at my kitchen table.

My kitchen is were everyone hangs out and the rolling dinette chairs we'd had since the 80's were comfortable but ugly and falling apart. My husband thought this chair was too expensive for kitchen use so I just bought one - for myself. I bought a $100 rolling task chair from a big box store for his place at the table. For several months he compared the comfort of the two chairs and the result was that my frugal husband asked for his own Setu kitchen chair for his birthday.

I have used many work chairs over the years and the Setu are the most comfortable I've ever used. When we toured the British Library they told us about their search to find chairs that were durable and comfortable no matter the size person. Their chairs are wonderful and the Setu chair feels very much like those in the British Library.

The (clawed) cat uses the chair as a step stool with no discernible impact on the mesh. The chairs look like new and I anticipate years of comfort and satisfaction.

The Setu chair design seems great for a small office...
Setu will not be my desk chair as hoped. The chair has a clean, simple design sized well for small home office. Color choices are nice. I'm happy with the look, but I have chronic lower back problems. Three weeks in, still can't get comfortable in the chair. I thought the mesh fabric and the reclining back would work well, but the curve of the back and the angle of the seat are wrong for me. The back hits at the location of my spinal instability. Requires conscious/constant effort to push the back to an angle that relieves the pressure on lumbar region. Long story short: chair looks great, like the size and color, but it was not a good choice given my spinal issues. I'm a small-framed, bony guy with back trouble who should know by now to always "test drive" furniture before making a decision to buy.

Quality Chair
I have spent the past 3 years in chairs of this make and it makes a superb office chair. I am 6' 4" and the back rises to just below my shoulder blades, a quite comfortable position.

The chair leans back the right amount so I am not too far from my desk but still supports me when I sit upright.

I often sit half cross legged in this chair and am quite comfortable.

I have never seen any significant signs of wear after 2 years in a university computer lab with near constant use and abuse.

I liked this chair enough to buy one for myself. They say you spend 90% of your life sitting, standing, or sleeping so spend your money accordingly and I think this is spending your money wisely.

Best chair I've ever owned
The design and quality are superb. I love this chair!

Good balance of back support, comfort, and style
Just received my Setu chair in black with basic features (graphite colored frame + h-alloy base finish, without arms) and let me say this... it looks even BETTER in person.

My favorite thing about this chair is that it's unobtrusive and I don't feel like I'm sitting in a chair at all.

Breakdown: the material of the chair feels breathable and light. It's been able to hold my natural sitting position and act as a gentle guide to get me into a healthier posture. The sturdy base lets me lean over in the chair without tipping it -- pretty unique for a chair with casters.

Kudos: one simple button to adjust the chair up and down makes this the friendliest chair I've owned.

Over time, will the Lyris suspension material stretch out and not offer the same support?
A shopper on Aug 11, 2011
Best Answer: Our Lyris suspension fabric is designed for seating to bear a user's weight with the ability to recover after a user has left the chair. The material contains what is called an "elastomeric yarn," which contributes to long term comfort and support, as well as the stretch and recovery properties. It has been put through a variety of strenuous testing to ensure that the chair maintains its full support for a minimum of 12 years and does not stretch out over time. Along with the long-term durability, Lyris also provides air flow to keep you cool and works with the spine of the chair to evenly distribute your weight for comfort.
Is there suppose to be a rod/bar that runs across the top of the seat back?

In older versions of this chair there is a rod that runs across the top of the seat back. In the ones we just purchased it doesn't seem to be there. Is this intentional or is there a piece missing?
A shopper on Oct 6, 2015
Best Answer: The Setu chair did have a spacing rod/bar installed at the top of the chair from 1/22/2013 to 5/13/2013. All chairs order after 5/13/2013 did not include the spacing rod/bar as an updated design to the frame solved the need for one.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
What is the weight limit the chair is designed to?
A shopper on Feb 1, 2012
Best Answer: The Setu Chair is rated for up to 300 pounds. If there is anything else we can help with, please feel free to call Herman Miller Customer Care at 888.798.0202.
Early on these were shown in a stool configuration. Is there still a possibility that could happen?
A shopper on Nov 27, 2011
Best Answer: We are not currently offering a stool version of the Setu Chair, but anything could happen in the future! In the meantime, we do offer the Aeron Chair with a stool version. You can see the Aeron Stool here:

http://store.hermanmiller.com/Products/Aeron-Stool
What fabric is the seat made out of? Does it have good air circulation? Thanks.
A shopper on Jul 11, 2011
Best Answer: The fabric on the Setu chair is called Lyris. Lyris can be described as a type of mesh material that was selected because of its strength, flexibility and ability to allow air to flow well through the back and seat. The Lyris fabric works together with the Setus spine to distribute weight evenly and conform to your body.

Im including a link to a short video clip that shows Setus designers, Studio 7.5, demonstrating the chair. There are quite a few helpful views of the fabric in the video.

I would also encourage other owners of the Setu to post an answer to give more first hand accounts of how Setu feels and breathes.
What is the height of the arm from the actual seat?
A shopper on Sep 17, 2015
Best Answer: The distance from the top of the suspension seat material to the top of an armrest is 8.5"-inches.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
Width of the Seat

Is the width of seat on the Setu Chair with arms the same seat width as the Setu chair without arms ?
A shopper on Jan 20, 2015
Best Answer: The seat width of the Setu Chair, with or without arms, is 18.9" inches wide. The overall width of the chair with arms is 24" inches.

Please contact the Herman Miller Online Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or via email at hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
What is the difference between "Carpet Casters" and "Hard Floor or Carpet Casters"?
A shopper on Jul 26, 2013
Best Answer: All caster options for the Setu Chair are suitable for carpet. There are a couple differences between the casters though, so we would recommend choosing the option that best fits the environment you will be using the Setu Chair in. Here are descriptions of each caster option available:

- Carpet Casters - Well suited for carpet and available in black.

- Hard Floor or Carpet Casters - Allows you the flexibility to use the chair on both hard floors or carpet and available in black.

- Translucent Hard Floor or Carpet Casters - Allows you to the flexibility to use the chair on both hard floors or carpet and available in a translucent color.

If you have any additional questions, or would like assistance with ordering a Setu, please give us a call at 888-798-0202.
Does the Setu chair swivel ?
A shopper on Apr 28, 2017
Best Answer: The Setu Chair does swivel.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
Does this chair have a tilt lock?

I have had problems with chairs before in that they tilt back with no way to control resistance, with the end result that my back is not supported as I sit. I have had to send back more than one chair because of this.
A shopper on Feb 15, 2017
Best Answer: Short answer: No, the Setu does not have a tilt lock, or any resistance controls. The only control on this chair is the height adjustment.

Long answer: The Setu has a spine that flexes when you lean against it, so you control how far you lean back by pushing your body weight into the back of the chair. The chair is shaped so the mesh supports your lumbar region. I think Setu is best for people who generally like to sit upright and straight, and for shorter periods of time than four hours.

If you want to control resistance manually, or sit for longer than four hours, I recommend chairs with a tilt tension control such as Sayl, Mirra 2, Aeron, or Embody. Cheers!
Is it good for short people?

I am 5'1" tall and have a hard time finding chairs that aren't too "deep" in the seat area. Does this chair fit petite women well?
A shopper on Jan 31, 2017
Best Answer: The Setu Chair would be a great option for people who range in height from 5'0" and up. The chair measurements are the following:

-Seat Depth: 15" (front of seat to the point where the suspension material starts to curve up)

-Seat Width: 18.75"

-Seat Height: 15.5"-20"

I would recommend the Small/A-size Aeron Chair if you're looking for more options and adjustments.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
Does the Setu Chair have a height adjustment
A shopper on Dec 7, 2016
Best Answer: The Setu chair does indeed have a height adjustment, with a range of 15.5-20" from the floor to the top of the seat.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888.798.0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
Would this be good for desks and working on computers?
A shopper on Sep 22, 2016
Best Answer: The Setu is a minimalist chair designed for stretches of 2 to 4 hours of continuous sitting. It's a great choice for working at a computer desk for less than four hours.

However, if you're looking to sit for longer, I would consider a chair with adjustable recline stops, tilt tension, and lumbar support. The Mirra 2, Aeron, Embody, Celle, and Sayl are all great choices for this. Herman Miller has a tool to help you decide which chair might be best for you:

http://www.hermanmiller.com/chair-selector

Good luck!
What is the weight and volume of this chair?
A shopper on Mar 7, 2016
Best Answer: The Setu chair weighs 23 pounds and has packaging dimensions of 40.5 x 28 x 28.5.

If you have any further questions, please contact customer care at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com
Adding the arms to the armless version in the future

Can ribbon arms be added at a later time, if I purchased the armless version?
A shopper on Nov 17, 2015
Best Answer: An authorized dealer in your area would be happy to add arms to your Setu chair at a later date.

To find the authorized dealer in your area, please follow this link: http://www.hermanmiller.com/Store/Find-a-Location

If you have any other questions, please reach out to the Herman Miller Online Store at hmstore@hermanmiller.com or 888.798.0202.
What range in person size does the chair accommodate?

My wife is 5'3" and I am 6'5". Also, do you have any versions of the Setu that go higher than 20"? Thanks.
A shopper on May 20, 2015
Best Answer: The height range that the Setu chair would accommodate is roughly 5'0" to 6'6" tall. The seat height range is similar to the Aeron chair in the Medium (B size) chair (16"-20.8") and would fit. For the best fit, we would recommend the standard height Setu chair for anyone 5'0" to 5'11" and the extended height to anyone 6'0" to 6'6"+. Below you will see the seat height measurements of the standard vs. the extended.

Standard Height: 15.7"-20.4" inches
Extended Height: 17.5"-21.7" inches

For the extended height Setu chair, please contact a dealer using the following web address:

http://www.hermanmiller.com/where-to-buy.html

The Standard height Setu chair is the only height option available through the Herman Miller Store.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
Setu Chair base variations?

Are all 3 variations of the Setu Chair base constructed of the same alloy?

Are the only differences that the Graphite variation is painted (is it powder-coated?), and that the Semi-polished variation has polished top and end flanges?

Are all 3 variations equally scratch-resistant?
A shopper on May 7, 2015
Best Answer: All three variations of the Setu base are created out of the same alloy.

The Graphite variation does have a painted powder-coated finish to provide the graphite color of the base. Whereas the Semi-Polished base has been bead blasted to provide the shiny appearance on the top and the end parts of the base.

If you have any other questions, please reach out to the Herman Miller Online Store at hmstore@hermanmiller.com or 888.798.0202.
Does the Setu Chair have a user weight limit?
A shopper on May 7, 2015
Best Answer: The Setu Chair has been tested and warranted for use for users 300 pounds and under.

If you have any other questions, please contact the Herman Miller Online Store at hmstore@hermanmiller.com or 888.798.0202
What is this chair's maximum recline angle in degrees?
A shopper on Apr 13, 2015
Best Answer: It's perhaps 20 degrees. It's not that far. It does not recline as much as a conventional chair. You will not be able to relax in it. It is purposely designed as a task chair to work in. The tension on the recline is tight and there is no adjust for it. I was also anticipating being able to relax in it, and disappointed. It is perfect in every way, but only to work in. In fact, it almost feels like it is pitching you forward. If you want recline, I would suggest you go with the Aero model. I plan to purchase one of those as well once I move to my new house. I had one before and I would recommend those before I recommend these.
What is the seat depth from the front of the seat to where your body reaches the back?
A shopper on Dec 28, 2014
Best Answer: The seat depth on the Setu Chair is 15 inches. The seat depth is measured from the front of the seat to the back of the seat where your body would touch the backrest.

If you have any other questions, please reach out to the Herman Miller Online Store at hmstore@hermanmiller.com or 888.798.0202.
I already have a setu chair, but want the hard floor casters (Translucent). Where can I get those?

Do you have a furniture protector for Setu legs?

I have a Setu chair with castors and the cast alloy base. The base is quite rough and is scratching/rubbing on my wooden cabinets and other surfaces in my office leaving marks and scratches. Do you have some sort of protective cap that can snap in the ends to protect this?

Thanks,
Matt
A shopper on Jan 12, 2014
Best Answer: Unfortunately, the Setu Chair does not have any bumpers or caps to attach on the base.

If you need further assistance, please contact Herman Miller Customer Care at 888.798.0202.
Model number for Setu Chair

I am trying to register my new Setu chair for the warranty and I cannot find the model number. Can you please let me know? Thanks!
A shopper on Jun 14, 2013
Best Answer: The model number of your Setu chair can be found on the white rectangular label located underneath the seat of the chair. The model number of your Setu chair will be in the upper left corner and start with "CQ" .

If there is anything else we can help you with, please give us a call at 888.798.0202 or send us an email at hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
Is the chair available in different cylinder heights?

Could the chair be specified with either a low or high cylinder ? It will give the chair a different range of heights. If so, what are the seat height ranges for each cylinder?
A shopper on Aug 30, 2012
Best Answer: Currently we offer a standard height cylinder for the Setu Chair on the Herman Miller Store and through authorized Herman Miller retailers. The seat height range is 15.5 - 20 inches.

If there is anything else we can help with, please give us a call at 888.798.0202.
Will you please provide the details for the white chair shown?

I see that it is the white frame, but am not certain which seat and back material is used in the white chair shown in the product photos. I'd love the combo of frame, base and material for that one. Thanks!
A shopper on Jun 20, 2012
Best Answer: The material shown in the image is White Lyris. The Lyris material has been replaced by Lyris2. The white option in the Lyris2 is currently not availabe. A release date is not known as yet.
What is height of armrests from floor, when not in use?
A shopper on Jan 16, 2012
Best Answer: The Setu Chair with 5-Star Base has an arm to floor height range of 23 to 27.5 inches. The arm to floor height will fall within that range depending on what seat height you have the chair adjusted to. Setu has a seat height adjustment range of 15.5 to 20 inches.

If there is anything else we can help you with, please feel free to contact The Herman Miller Store at 888.798.0202.
Does this chair have a height and tilt adjustment?
A shopper on Dec 14, 2011
Best Answer: Setu has a height adjustment that allows you to select a seat height in the range of 15.5 - 20 inches. It does not provide specific tilt adjustments, but does allow you to comfortably tilt in the chair. The unique spine for Setu is made of a material that can also be found in toothbrushes and garbage cans. The combination of materials used for the spine and the spokes within the spine helps create strength and flexibility in a lightweight and durable form.

If you are looking for a tilt adjustment, you may also want to consider Aeron or Mirra. Both chairs allow you to order specific tilt options to give you more control over your recline.

For additional assistance, please feel free to contact The Herman Miller Store at 888.798.0202.
