Care and Maintenance

Polished Aluminum

For normal cleaning, apply a pre-softened paste wax to polished aluminum components following the manufacturer's instructions. In humid atmospheres near salt water, apply the wax once a month. In other areas, apply wax every three months to maintain the appearance of the aluminum.

Coated Metal

For normal cleaning, wash coated metal surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in detergent and warm water; rinse thoroughly and dry. Remove scuff marks from low-gloss coatings with pre-softened paste wax, following the manufacturer's instructions. Remove scuff marks and scratches from high-gloss coatings using automotive polishing compounds, either liquid or paste. After polishing, apply a pre-softened automotive paste wax to restore original sheen. For assistance in determining the appropriate color and gloss for Herman Miller touch-up paint, contact your Herman Miller Customer Service Representative.

Fabric

For normal cleaning, vacuum upholstery fabric using an upholstery attachment. If further cleaning is needed, dry-clean or spot clean fabric with solvent cleaner.

Do not brush fabric or use a vacuum attachment with a rotary brush. Brushing may permanently damage the nap or change the character of the fabric.

Do not apply water or any liquid solution. Wetting the fabric with any liquid solution may result in permanent damage.

Vinyl Upholstery

For normal cleaning, wash vinyl upholstery with a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush lathered with mild, nonabrasive soap and lukewarm water. Before the surface dries, wipe with a clean, dry cloth to remove any residue. This procedure may be repeated to remove stubborn dirt or stains.

Ink spots can sometimes be removed by washing with soap and water followed by isopropyl alcohol.

Do not use any cleaning method that is not listed above, as other methods may attack the vinyl and cause eventual degradation.

Leather

For normal cleaning, vacuum or dust frequently with a clean, dry cloth. If leather is soiled, it can be wiped with a damp soft cloth and a lather of any mild soap and a minimum amount of lukewarm water. Do not spot clean leather; clean the entire surface. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry with a clean, soft cloth.

For spots and spills, wipe excess liquid immediately with a clean cloth or sponge; let the leather air dry. If the spot is still visible, further cleaning may be necessary. Sponge the entire surface—seat, back, or chair arm—with clean, lukewarm water. Let the leather air dry; never use a hair dryer or other heat source to dry leather.

For stubborn spots and stains, apply a mild, nonabrasive soap solution with a clean, wet sponge. Rinse well and let air dry. For butter, oil, or grease, wipe the leather with a clean, dry cloth and let the remainder of the oil dissipate into the leather. Do not apply water or try to wash a grease spot.

Do not use saddle soap, cleaning solvents, oils, furniture polishes, varnishes, abrasive cleaners, detergents, or ammonia on leather; they will ruin the finish, causing it to become sticky and cracked.

One of the best desk chairs ever made
This chair will break in slowly, last forever and never look dated.

Beautiful but back pain inducing chair
I bought this chair at DWR. The chair is beautiful and of truly excellent built quality. Sadly, the back is shaped the reverse of how it should be. There is zero lumbar support and the top of the back pushes you forward, forcing you into a slouch. I tried the chair for a few days, but after developing a terrible cramp in my back, I decided to return it. It's the first Eames designed chair that I have found uncomfortable. If you look at a photo of the chair taken from the side, you'll see what i mean. The curvature is the reverse of how it should be.

Overpriced!
Great chair! It's just overpriced. They even use fabric between the leather layers to save money. 100% of the cushions should be leather for this price.

Timeless-Lifetime Chair
Better name would be timeless-lifetime chair. Super comfy, high quality, luxurious, and definitely makes a statement with its iconic design. Thinking of getting another one in another color. Leather is ultra-high quality. Feels great for long periods of sitting due to the unusually wide seat. Highly recommend

Very nice chair
Only complaint is the seams are not finished. The leather is not folded over to make a smooth seam, they are left rough. Everything else about the chair is lovely.

I now have four (4) of these chairs....my wife's office, my office,
my home in the mountains, and my Boulder Co office
The oldest one dates from the 1970's
I think they are very comfortable

Seat depth

While gorgeous and surely comfortable for most, I'm curious, as a shorter gentleman, if the seat is too deep for me to sit in a proper, comfortable position. For context, I'm at my desk 12 hours a day, so I'm very concerned about having my back against the chair, feet on the floor, and enough room between the front of the seat and the back of my knees. Thank you.

Best Answer: The Eames Executive Chair has a seat depth of 19.5 inches. We typically recommend approximately two inches between the seat and the back of the users knee.

With glides the chairs height range is 16-18.5 inches and with casters the height range is 17.5-20 inches.

When you say the seat can go up to 20" high, are you measuring from the ground to the highest point on the top of the seat cushion, or somewhere else?

What is the seat height of the Eames Executive Chair -if on casters?

As a handicapped and very small adult, it is imperative for me to see all the measurements, especially seat min./max., and best to receive the information directly from you -not third parties.

Also, do you have more detailed descriptions of the chair fabric options -elsewhere here on your site or perhaps in a catalog?

As displayed now, subtle yet important factors remain elusive between your options: one fabric may be considered quite comfortable and hardy for the demands of a long-hours, large-staffed office while another fabric may be widely agreed as the softest against the skin and while also long-lasting, perhaps better suited to the demands of one person's daily usage.

Thank you for the ease of a Product Q & A option here -and of course for the incredible products you offer.
A shopper on Sep 11, 2011
Best Answer: The Eames Executive Chair has a minimum seat height of 17" and a maximum seat height of 20" if on casters.
