  • Eco-Dematerialised Design

    Eco-Dematerialised Design

Herman Miller and Yves Behar are big on environmental responsibility in design. With SAYL, we went a step farther, starting out by thinking about what could be removed from a simple dining chair.

The result was a lightweight chair that is 92 percent recyclable. Structural components are hollowed out, reducing the weight and volume of material.

  • The Best for the Most for the Least

"The Best for the Most for the Least"

It was the standard for the furniture designs of Charles and Ray Eames and an inspiration for Yves Behar when working on SAYL: Make a product that is the best design for the most people at the most affordable price.

As affordable as it is inventive, SAYL disproves the notion that a reasonably priced chair means offhand design and minimal comfort. From the beginning, our goal was to make high-quality, beautifully designed, comfortable work and side chairs that lived up to our standards and were also affordable. SAYL is that chair.

Living Unframed

"The best for the most for the least"

Beauty, Elegance, Respect

We like working with designer Yves Béhar, who designed our Leaf and Ardea personal lights. We like the way he thinks unframed, never constrained by what's expected or typical.

So we went to him when we wanted a highly affordable ergonomic work chair that would incorporate everything Herman Miller is known for—beautiful design, first-class ergonomics, elegant engineering, and respect for the environment. Béhar began by scratching a quote from Charles Eames onto his sketchpad: "The best for the most for the least." And then Béhar, who calls San Francisco home, took a look at his city's best-known landmark: the Golden Gate Bridge.

Beauty, Elegance, Respect Beauty, Elegance, Respect

Something Unique

So there was the concept. Creating the actual chair wasn't quite that simple. SAYL wasn't designed on a computer. It was sketched and sketched again, and numerous prototypes were built and rejected before the design was right. He describes the process as "draw, build, break, and repeat until you arrive at something unique."

So why the name "SAYL?" Take a look at the chair from the side. See the resemblance to a full mainsail? The name reflects the sailing vessels that pass beneath the bridge that inspired the original design. Replacing the "i" in "SAIL" with a "y" is a nod to the innovative Y-Tower structure of the work chair.

Suspending a Chair

Suspending a Chair

Béhar wondered, could the engineering principles of a suspension bridge be applied to a chair? It turned out that not only was it possible, but using a suspension tower to support an unframed back would reduce materials, weight, and environmental impact. The flexible elastomer suspension material could be stretched in a way that provided the greatest tension at points where support is needed and the least in areas that would allow for the most expansive range of motion.

Polished Aluminum

For normal cleaning, apply a pre-softened paste wax to polished aluminum components following the manufacturer's instructions. In humid atmospheres near salt water, apply the wax once a month. In other areas, apply wax every three months to maintain the appearance of the aluminum.

Crossing Fabric

For normal cleaning, vacuum fabric as needed using an upholstery attachment. Vacuuming picks up dust and reduces the need for professional cleaning. Do not brush fabric or use a vacuum attachment with a rotary brush. Brushing may permanently damage the nap or change the character of the fabric.

To spot-clean fabric, immediately soak up the stain with a soft absorbent cloth. Do not dry the stain completely or it may set. The longer a stain is allowed to remain on a fabric, the more difficult it is to remove. For water-based stains such as coffee, soft drinks, fruit juices, or milk use a water-based cleaner (specifically made for cleaning fabric) or a solution of mild (alkaline) warm soapy water (not overly soapy) applied with a damp clean cloth or sponge. Work the cleaner into a lather or foam.Never use hot water; it will set the stain. Avoid scrubbing.

For oil-based stains such as lipstick, grease, or salad dressing use a dry cleaning solution applied with a damp clean cloth or sponge. Test the cleaning solution on a small, concealed area first. If there is no spotting, ringing, or damage to the fabric or its dyes, apply the cleaning solution to the soiled area with light, quick strokes. Begin at the outside of the stain and work toward the center, being careful not to over-saturate the fabric. K2r is also a product that can be used. See product label for complete instructions.

Do not over apply water or any liquid solution to fabric. Excessive wetting of the fabric with any liquid solution may result in permanent damage to the material. Do not rub too vigorously or you may damage the nap of the fabric or break fibers. Several light applications are better than one heavy application. Soak up all remaining solution and then use another clean cloth or sponge dipped in cool water to remove any residue. Let fabric dry thoroughly and then vacuum well before using. If the stain resists cleaning, call a professional cleaner.

If large areas are soiled, contact a professional cleaning firm.
