Sculpture as Seating.
"Something Truly Good"
When the Time-Life Building was erected in 1959, it was the largest slab-formed skyscraper in New York, but not the most critically acclaimed. Opinions differed about the structure itself, but there was little disagreement about the handsome and ultra-modern lobby decorated with murals by Joseph Albers and seating by Charles Eames. In 1960, Ray Eames was asked to design occasional pieces for the lobby.
Foundation in Sculpture
Trained as a sculptor, Ray created the walnut stools. They became her favorite seats and were scattered all over the Pacific Palisades home she shared with her husband.
An Investment for a Lifetime
A museum curator once ordered two of these stools for his son and daughter. "The kids are only five and three," he said, "but I want them to have the experience of growing up with something truly good that they can keep all their lives."

Solid Wood and Veneer
For normal cleaning, dust furniture daily with a slightly damp, soft cloth. Wipe dry with a dry, soft cloth in the direction of the wood grain. Once a month, clean the surface with a soft cloth dampened with a quality cleaner formulated for wood furniture. Wipe the surface in the direction of the wood grain to remove dirt and fingerprints. Wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth. Twice a year, apply a good quality emulsion wax to the finish with a soft cloth. Emulsion wax is clear and prevents fingerprints.
For minor repair of water rings, stains, and scratches, rub the surface lightly in the direction of the wood grain using No. 000 steel wool. Apply a scratch-removing polish with a color and value that simulate the veneer. If the scratches are deep, consult a professional furniture refinisher.
