    Design Staying Power

As beloved today as when it was first introduced in 1948, the Eames molded plastic armchair features organic shapes and sleek lines. The first one-piece plastic chair offered without upholstery or other covering, it achieved a pervasive presence that proves the staying power of good design. It sits beautifully in many places in the home and in all kinds of décor.

    Classic Comfort

Charles and Ray Eames believed that comfort was as important as looks. So comfort is built in. The shell seats have high, flexible backs, deep seat pockets, and waterfall front edges so you can sit comfortably even for extended periods.

  • Colorful Variety

    Colorful Variety

Originally produced in only three neutral colors—greige, elephant-hide grey, and parchment—the chair is now available in 10 colors that range from vibrant to subtle, either chrome or black base, and rockers in maple or walnut.

Shells are made of polypropylene—which is 100 percent recyclable. The plating process used for our trivalent chrome finish reduces environmental and health issues associated with other forms of chrome plating.

I was wondering if you sold the rocker chair base as a separate piece. The chrome one.

its hard to tell in photos, what exactly is the difference in these two colors? Is wafer more off-white? or is it silver-ish? Are there any photos of the two side by side? hard to tell based on renderings...

Answer:
You're right...it is hard to tell in the photos the difference between "wafer" and "white" and we are in the process of updating our imagery to better reflect the colors. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

"Wafer" can be described as a light tan. This finish is a matte finish.

Here are the finish samples side by side to provide a visual comparison. Give us a call at 888.798.0202 or send us an email at HMstore@HermanMiller.com with your information and we would be happy to send you physical samples of the colors you are interested in.

Eames Molded Plastic Armchair Rocker Base 2.7 5 3 3
Visually striking and very flexible to use Comfort is relative and to accurately assess the comfort of this chair you have to take into account the fact that it's made of plastic. I'm a smaller male; 5' 9" about 135 lbs and I am able to comfortable sit in the RAR for at least a couple hours. The back and arm rests as well as the waterfall seat front all work together to make it relatively comfortable. After a while though, the hind-end does start to become a bit numb. The quality is very solid. The chair itself is very light and it's impressive how stable it is. I find that it's both bold but not over-bearing and compliments all of our other furniture. We can use it both in our formal living room and our bedroom. My wife (also quite small; 5' 1" 100 lbs) finds it comfortable enough to rock our baby to sleep. It's always been one of my favorite designs so I'm elated it's also so easy to live with. August 27, 2012
We wanted to love this! We wanted to love this chai! The overall look & craftsmanship are EXCELLENT.... No qualms there! The seat sits incredibly low ( to the ground) ... Doesn't seem to have good rocking momentum .... Which could have been resolved in the design phase. Also the plastic that the bucket is made of is extremely hard ... Which makes sitting for more than 5 minutes kind of awkward & painful. Weird shape, we never could get comfortable in it ... Even with back pillows & seat cushions. This was supposed to be an "ergonomic" chair ( I think)??? We ordered this online ... Then waited nearly two months to receive. I was sad to return this item ... Since we really wanted to love it! Fantastic color selections April 13, 2012
Don't like the plastic molded detail on seat Truly love the design of the rocker, but wish Herman Miller stay true to the original materials... Really like the fiberglass look more than the plastic molded look. The plastic mold makes the chair look cheap and more toy like. I'm still a fan of Herman Miller classic chairs. I just want to give some constructive criticism Thank you April 13, 2012
