Coated Metal

For normal cleaning, wash coated metal surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in detergent and warm water; rinse thoroughly and dry. Remove scuff marks from low-gloss coatings with pre-softened paste wax, following the manufacturer's instructions. Remove scuff marks and scratches from high-gloss coatings using automotive polishing compounds, either liquid or paste. After polishing, apply a pre-softened automotive paste wax to restore original sheen. For assistance in determining the appropriate color and gloss for Herman Miller touch-up paint, contact your Herman Miller Customer Service Representative.

Plastic

For normal cleaning, wash plastic surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive kitchen cleaners.

Fabric

For normal cleaning, vacuum upholstery fabric using an upholstery attachment. If further cleaning is needed, dry-clean or spot clean fabric with solvent cleaner.

Do not brush fabric or use a vacuum attachment with a rotary brush. Brushing may permanently damage the nap or change the character of the fabric.

Very satisfied
I've had my Embody chair for about a month now and I am very satisfied with it. It is very comfortable to sit in for long sessions working or gaming. I especially notice it when I get up after a long session and my back doesn't hurt like it used to in other (very cheap) chairs. All the controls work as you'd expect. The armrests are fine; more movement options would be nice, but 90% of the time I'm content with them as they are. I got the basic black fabric and it's working fine for me; plenty comfortable and looks nice. I love the aesthetics of the all-black chair. Overall, I'd rate this the best chair I've ever sat in, and I'm tempted to buy a second one for the office. I got this because I was worried about my back health, and I am completely happy with my purchase.

Best chair I have ever sat in
Literally molds to and supports your back. excellent for sitting and working on a computer while you use your mouse, keyboard and phone which often requires subtle back adjustments. This chair keeps up!

Average sitting hours of 10 per day, zero back soreness
I have been reading about Herman miller products for a long time, but never got around to actually buying one due mainly to price.

This year though I decided to give it a try and couldn't be happier. By far the best office chair I have sat on.

I am 5,6 155 and I found my optimal setting in a matter of one day of sitting on it. It is firm enough to support your entire back, yet loose enough to not feel like you have a wooden stick behind you.

Overall I would say for those whose price tag it might scare off, 1300 for 10 years is not expensive at all. We buy smartphones for that price and keep them for 2...

Time to save up for the Ottoman one now for the living room.

an honest opinion
I waited 2 months after receiving my chair before posting my review. I made my purchase based solely on online research, I did not visit a showroom to try out this chair. I work from home and spend at least 40 hours a week in this chair.

My first ~10-14 days of using it, I would find it comfortable for the first bit, but then would be uncomfortable. At first the adjust the Backfit multiple times a day, then around the 10th day I think I made my last adjustment to it. Once I found the fit that works for me, it has been absolutely fantastic.

There are the odd creaks when sitting/standing. Nothing that has bothered me, and honestly with as many moving parts to this as there are, I consider it acceptable (at least). There are a number of reviews that seem to exacerbate this issue beyond what it is. If at some point it changes, then I may reach out to find what I can do myself.

All in all, I'm completely satisfied with my purchase. The only regret I have is not making it years ago.

Good overall chair. Better than ergohuman
When I first used this chair, the lower back support hurt me due to my body position / structure. Specifically around the tailbone. It was a strange feeling not.like the pressure points of other chairs -- more like soreness after stretching. I started doing yoga again and specifically hip exercises, and now the pain is gone. It moved up my back slowly and now I feel no pain in my chair.

I believe the chair opened.my back up and realigned my muscles, causing me to sit straighter. The upper back support at the shoulders really helps with posture which helps with blood flow.

The seat is awesome.

My only complaint is that the tilt limiter only blocks backwards. I cannot lock it from coming back up -- maybe by design as the chair encourages good posture. The adjustments are easy to use, well built, and have the standard controls with more granular ranges plus a lumbar control which basically just adjusts curviture of the chair.

Would give 5 stars if not for initial pain and the missing forward tilit limiter.

Bonus half-star for arriving fully assembled

Love it!
My Embody is new and I've only had a chance to spend a few hours in it but so far it is just fantastic. The quality of the construction of the piece is superb and the support it provides my butt, legs and back is excellent. I think the look is "industrial chic" with the cool "skeleton-like" back design. I'm very pleased with my purchase and wish I had done so some time ago! Recommended without reservation.

Worth Every Cent.
I've sat in a LOT of office chairs over the past 25 years. The Embody is BY FAR the most comfortable chair i've ever sat in. I can't thing of a single negative thing to say about it. I was a bit worried it would end up just looking great and not actually being all that great. But it is indeed GREAT!

Embody or Aeron Chair

I spend about fourteen hours a day in front of the computer. I am 6'2, 230 lbs. Which chair would best fit my needs: The Aeron or the Embody Chair?
A shopper on Mar 30, 2012
Best Answer: Both the Embody Chair and a size C Aeron Chair would be a good fit for your body type and length of sitting. If you prefer to lean back while you are sitting, you may want to consider the Embody Chair. It's spine is designed to provide healthy support for your back for long hours of sitting in front of a computer. The Backfit adjustment positions the backrest in line with your spine's natural curve, so you achieve and maintain a neutral, balanced posture. The chair also allows you to adjust your seat depth to fit your thigh length for ultimate comfort and support.

What is the difference between the casters?
A shopper on Oct 24, 2011
Best Answer: All caster options for the Embody Chair are suitable for carpet. There are a couple differences between the casters though, so we would recommend choosing the option that best fits the environment you will be using the Embody Chair in. Here are descriptions of each caster option available:

- Carpet Casters - Well suited for carpet and available in black.

- Hard Floor or Carpet Casters - Allows you the flexibility to use the chair on both hard floors or carpet and available in black.

- Translucent Hard Floor or Carpet Casters - Allows you to the flexibility to use the chair on both hard floors or carpet and available in a translucent color.

If you have any additional questions, or would like assistance with choosing your Embody, please feel free to contact Herman Miller Customer Care at 888-798-0202.
Has an extended piston option been released yet for the Embody?

At 6'4" with stupid long legs, I can't buy an Embody until their is a longer piston option. I like to check in every year to see if that's happened yet!
A shopper on Apr 5, 2014
Best Answer: I'm 6'4" and have long legs too. My height is in my thighs.
There is very little tension in my hams due to length of seat but I can see that you may want a higher sitting position. this works for me with the desk I use.I Its been two months and I seem to like it more each day. I have three "C" Aeron's surounding it and everyone wants to sit in MY chair, the Embody.
Titanium or Aluminum base?

I am considering purchasing the Embody Chair, but have a question regarding the base. Is the titanium option also made of metal or is it just a color option made of plastic? Secondly what are the benefits of having the aluminum version vs the black or titanium versions.
A shopper on Apr 21, 2016
Best Answer: The Graphite, Titanium, and Polished aluminum base are all made from die-cast aluminum. The only difference between the base colors is the way they are coated. The bases are coated with the following:

Graphite Base - Texture powder coat
Titanium Base - Smooth powder coat
Polished Aluminum Base - Polished Aluminum

Is it bad practice to leave a heavy coat on the back of my Embody chair?

I know that the individual actuators in the back are quite sensitive. Could a heavy coat applying weight on the top of the chair cause any damage to the sensitivity of the back-curve adjusting mechanism over time?
A shopper on Dec 18, 2013
Best Answer: Any weight or downward force applied to the backrest will effect the flexibility/performance of the back support, which provides support and comfort by spontaneously conforming to the users shape and postural movements.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
DOES THE EMBODY CHAIR HAVE A LEVER TO MOVE IT UP AND DOWN?

i'M TRYING TO LOWER THE CHAIR...BUT CAN'T FIND A WAY TO DO IT.
A shopper on Apr 2, 2012
Best Answer: On the right side of your Embody Chair is a round joystick that can be used to adjust your seat height. To raise your seat height, angle the joystick upward and lift your weight off the seat until it raises to your preferred height. To lower your seat, angle the joystick downward while sitting and lower the seat to a comfortable height. At the proper seat height, there should be slightly less than a 90 degree angle between your thighs and calves.

why does this chair has no seat cushion

You would think for people who sit behind their computer at their workstation for long periods of time. I have one of these chairs the Embody Chair, I am experiencing the seat part feels so hard for my sit bones. That I had to purchase a seat cushion for my Embody Chair.
A shopper on Dec 23, 2015
Best Answer: The Embody chair's Pixelated Seat Support consists of three layers: a layer of tensioned Arnitel bands, a layer
of acetal coil springs, and a top mat layer that consist of a set of interconnected Sarlink pads allowing movement of heat away from the body. The seat was designed to distribute the users weight and provide a comfortable seated experience for long term usage.

Herman Miller does not offer a cushion for the Embody chair or any of the office chairs. First adjustment to consider to relieve pressure points would be the Height adjustment (start high and lower in small increments).

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
Does the chair have the ability to tilt forward and lock?

I like having my upper legs drop down a little while I'm sitting in a chair. I don't believe the Embody Chair has the forward tilt functionality, but wanted to ask and make sure. Does anyone know?
A shopper on Dec 9, 2016
Best Answer: The Embody chair does not offer a forward tilt option.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
What is the height from floor to top of arm rest when the arm rest is at its minimum height?
A shopper on Feb 8, 2014

When the arm height and seat height are at their minimum height, the height from the floor to the top of the arm rest is 22.5 inches. The height from the top of the floor to the top of the arm rest can range from 22.5-32 inches.

Does this chair fit an average height woman's body?

Often an office chair with it's back, contour, etc. is designed for a man and does not fit a woman's average body. So do any average height and weight women have experience with this chair?
A shopper on Mar 17, 2017
Best Answer: Yes, the Embody Chair accommodates the 95th percentile/average height of both male and female users. There are three standard adjustments which allow such a broad range of users:

1) BackFit Adjustment - BackFit allows users to fit the backrest to their spine's curvature.

2) Seat Depth Adjustment - The handles on the right and left sides of the seat allow the user to adjust the seat depth from 15" to 18".

3) Adjustable Arms - The arms adjust up and down, as well as in and out to support shorter user to the tallest user.

-Mercer Charcoal (21310)
-Balance Carbon (3512)
-Balance Black (3513)

Can the adjustable arms be positioned so they do not hit against a keyboard pull out tray?
A shopper on Apr 20, 2016
Best Answer: The Embody Chair arm height can be adjusted very low to avoid contact with a work surface or keyboard tray. The arm height adjustment range is approximately 5" or from 6.5" to 11.5" from the seat to minimize shoulder strain. The arms height can be adjusted by pressing a button on the underside of the armpad to raise or lower.

The arms can also be adjust to four incremental width locations when the user applies horizontal force or 12" apart to 21" (inward for keyboarding, outward for mousing).
The arms will lock when the user applies weight when entering or exiting the chair.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
How does this chair hold up with pets around?

Is this chair durable enough to stand up against cat claws or a dog constantly jumping up into the seat?
A shopper on Feb 24, 2016
Best Answer: We do not test or warrant any of our products against pets. Since the chair has a fabric seat and back a cat or dog could easily get their claws into the fabric causing it to fray or tear.

If you have any further questions, please contact customer support at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com
I own one of these chairs, but I need a taller back with the lumbar curve in a higher location. Are taller backs available?

I have been usjng this chair for 4 years with moderate discomfort and just today brought it in to my Physical Therapist to examine. She took one look and observed that the back of the chair was far too short for me (6' 1"# and the lumbar cuve was far too low for my back.. When she sat in it #5' 2"# it fit her perfectly. I can't find any way to adjust the entire back upwards. Are taller backs available for purchase? If not, I will have to abandon the chair.
A shopper on Jan 28, 2016
Best Answer: I'm not affiliated with Herman Miller, but I'm 99% sure there is not a taller back available for this chair (source http://www.hermanmiller.com/content/dam/hermanmiller/documents/pricing/PB_EMB.pdf). One thing to note is I don't think the curve at the base of the chair's spine is necessarily for the lumbar region; it's designed to push the pelvis forward slightly to relieve pressure on the spine. According to the literature on this chair, the H-supports conform to your natural back shape once the BackFit lever is adjusted to your body.

My experience with the BackFit is that the more you turn it, the looser the chair becomes in the lumbar region and the tighter it becomes in the upper back/shoulder region. I've heard that a good way to set the BackFit is to tighten it all the way by rotating it clockwise, then rotate it counterclockwise until you feel the Embody supports your back gently throughout its curve. If you have a flatter lower back, you'll find the Embody more comfortable with the Backfit tighter. If you have a more curved lower back, you'll find the Embody more comfortable with the BackFit looser.

I know the chair can be uncomfortable if it's adjusted improperly, so give this a try before abandoning the Embody forever. Here is the adjustment guide:

https://www.hermanmiller.com/content/dam/hermanmiller/documents/user_information/Embody_Chairs_adjustment_guide.pdf

Good luck, and go Broncos.
What color is the Iris fabric? It looks darker in the Rhythm vs balance?

I was hoping it is purple! It's hard to tell from the pictures online. Thanks!

the seat keeps falling

I have my Embody chair adjusted to the highest height, and lately the seat has started slipping down on its own, dropping me to the lowest setting, without touching anything. I'll just be sitting there working and the base falls, sometimes slowly in increments, sometimes all at once. Is there an adjustment I can make or tighten to stop this from happening? Or is it a defect?
A shopper on Mar 3, 2015
Best Answer: If the pneumatic cylinder is not holdingthe chair at the setheight, then the cylinder must be replaced.

The Embody chaircarries a 12 year warranty with all original owners for chairs manufactured since 2000. Replacement parts can easily be obtained throughanAuthorized Dealer or Retailer.

If you know where you originally purchased your chair, please contact them directly. Is this a good chair for a big and tall person?

Hi:

I'm 6'6" and 370 lbs. I'm looking for a chair that does not fully compress and tilt back when I sit in it. My current chair is also not tall enough and when I sit in it the spring loaded seat compresses/tilts back forcing me to have to lunge forward to work at my desk. To resolve this problem I sit on the front edge of the chair without back support. My office manager called our furniture supplier and they brought in a super wide chiar for me but this did not address the height problem or back support issue. It was sent back and they suggested that I select a chair that would work for me. Will the Embody Chair resolve this issue? If not, can you make a suggestion? Thank you in advance for your advice.
A shopper on Jan 13, 2015
Best Answer: I recommend finding a local store that carries this chair and sit in it. That is what I did. I had the same concerns. I'm 6'-2 260# with a fairly even torso/inseam ratio. the back of the chair is about 2-3" below the top of my shoulders
What type of foot rest is recommended?

Can anybody recommend a foot rest? Do you use a soft/cushiony type or a hard plastic type foot rest? Is your foot rest easy to adjust?

I see a foot rest on the Herman Miller site but there does not seem to be a way to purchase it. It'd be great if it could match the embody chair colors.
A shopper on Dec 8, 2014
Best Answer: Herman Miller does offer a foot pillow through their Thrive program. The Herman Miller Online Store does not offer this product.

An Authorized Dealer in your area would be happy to help answer any questions you may have on the foot pillow and help you order one. To find an Authorized Dealer in your area, please follow this link: http://www.hermanmiller.com/where-to-buy.html

Adjusting Lumbar Support

I sat in the Embody. It felt like the upper back of it was pushing on my shoulders and like there was nothing supporting my lumbar. Is there a way to adjust it for less push forward on the upper back and more support in the lower back?
A shopper on Nov 5, 2014
Best Answer: The Embody backrest can be adjusted with the backfit feature. Backfit allows the user to fit the backrest to their spines curvature and will allow them to adjust the backrest from the forward position to the rear position. Backfit is be adjusted by turning the knob located at rear right side of chair behind the seat.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
How low can you adjust the Embody Chair?

I have an Aeron and like how low you can adjust it. Can the Embody be adjusted as low as the Aeron?
A shopper on Oct 5, 2014
Best Answer: The seat height on the Embody Chair ranges from 16 inches in its lowest position up to 20.5 inches in its highest position.

If you have the B or the C sized Aeron chair, the seat height ranges from 15 inches up to 21 inches. Additionally, on the A sized Aeron Chair, the seat height ranges from 14.5 inches up to 19.5 inches.

Overall, the Embody chair does not go as low as the Aeron Chair but is still a great ergonomic option.

If you have any other questions, please reach out to the Herman Miller Online store at hmstore@hermnamiller.com or by giving them a call at 888.798.0202.
What's the Seat Depth

What's the seat depth measurement. i.e. from where the back of the knee would hit to the closest part of the back support.
A shopper on Jan 9, 2014
Best Answer: The seat depth range for the Embody chair is 15-18 inches. If you have any further questions, please contact Herman Miller Customer Care at 888.798.0202.
Extended height option and custom castors

In the product brochure pdf there is an option to chose different heights for the embody chair including an extended height opposed to standard height. However on the herman miller online store here I do not see any options to select a height option when going through the checkout process.

2nd question, are the casters used by herman miller base use a typical 7/16" standard shaft for attachment so 3rd party casters can be used? Even with the extended height it will be short an inch or two for my purposes, but can be rectified by using 4" casters instead of standard 2".
A shopper on Sep 26, 2013
Best Answer: We currently offer the standard height version of the Embody Chair online, but additional options, including extended height can be purchashed through a Herman Miller authorized dealer or retailer.

The Herman Miller bases use the 7/16" shaft because it is the industry standard. We do not test our products for third party casters. Third party casters may fit, but they would void the warranty.

If there is anything else we can help with, please feel free to contact Herman Miller Customer Care at 888.798.0202
If I purchase the Embody chair with the black hard floor casters can I easily change the casters to the translucent casters myself after the purchase?
A shopper on Jun 11, 2013
Best Answer: Yes, the casters can easily be changed out if needed after purchasing an Embody Chair by following these 3 simple steps:

1. Gently invert the chair and place on a clean work surface
2. Pull casters from base using a rocking motion
3. Insert new caster into base leg until fully engaged
