Coated Metal

For normal cleaning, wash coated metal surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in detergent and warm water; rinse thoroughly and dry. Remove scuff marks from low-gloss coatings with pre-softened paste wax, following the manufacturer's instructions. Remove scuff marks and scratches from high-gloss coatings using automotive polishing compounds, either liquid or paste. After polishing, apply a pre-softened automotive paste wax to restore original sheen. For assistance in determining the appropriate color and gloss for Herman Miller touch-up paint, contact your Herman Miller Customer Service Representative.

Plastic

For normal cleaning, wash plastic surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive kitchen cleaners.

Laminates

Products using laminate may include tabletops, work surfaces, counter caps, transaction surfaces, flipper doors, and lateral files.

For normal cleaning, wash the laminate with a soft cloth and a solution of mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.

For minor repair of burns or other stubborn marks, apply a nonabrasive liquid kitchen cleanser with a soft cloth soaked in warm water. Rub in the direction of the grain; use caution to avoid damaging the surface texture or gloss. If no grain direction is visible, rub with a light, circular motion.

Do not use powdered abrasives or other harsh cleansers like hypochlorite bleach, hydrogen peroxide, nitric or hydrochloric acids, or lye; they may deface the surface and change the finish color.

Molded Infield

Normal Cleaning

For normal cleaning, wash with a soft cloth soaked in mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive kitchen cleaners.

Ink Stains

Apply isopropyl alcohol to a clean, damp absorbent cloth. Start at the outside of the ink stain and work towards the center. Apply pressure but do not rub too vigorously. It is important as the cloth becomes stained, use a clean section of the dampened cloth or the stain will spread. Apply isopropyl alcohol to the cloth as needed. If ink stain persists, use acetone in place of procedure above. This procedure is not intended for normal cleaning.

Wood & Veneer

This includes Herman Miller products finished with wood veneer or recut wood veneer, except the oiled Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman with Rosewood, Oiled Walnut, or Oiled Santos Palisander veneer unless specifically noted.

Normal Cleaning
Dust regularly with a slightly damp, soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe dry with a dry, soft cloth in the directionof the wood grain.Spills should be immediately wiped up with a damp cloth.

Once a month
Clean the surface with a soft cloth dampened with a quality cleaner formulated for wood furniture. Wipe the surface in the direction of the wood grain to remove dirt and fingerprints. Wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth.

Twice a year
Apply a good quality furniture polish with a soft cloth. Do not use aerosol-powered cleaners or polishes. Also, do not use polishes containing waxes or abrasives, or polishes that are oil based.

Stains
Herman Miller veneers meet strict testing standards for resistance to wear, light, stains, water, and pressure. To reduce the risk of damage, take some precautions: Use coasters for glasses and mugs. If a glass top is added to the veneer surface, be sure it rests on felt pads. Don’t place a potted plant on a veneer surface unless it’s in a water-tight container or in a drip tray.Don’t let vinyl binders stay on a surface for very long. Use protective pads under equipment with “rubber” cushioning feet. Some chemical compounds used in the feet on office equipment, such as printers and monitor stands, may leave permanent stains or marks.

Minor repair of water rings, stains, and scratches
Rub the surface lightly in the direction of the wood grain using No. 000 steel wool. Apply a scratch-removing polish with a color and value that simulate the veneer. If the scratches are deep, consult a professional furniture refinisher.

Other Damage
Wood is susceptible to bruising and scratching from heavy office equipment, so we encourage a protective surface is placed underneath. Objects should be lifted instead of dragged across a surface. Protective pads should be used under items with a rough bottom, like pottery. Denting, caused by extreme pen pressure when writing, can also damage veneer. Use desk pads or some other protection where a lot of paperwork is done. Sunlight can damage veneer as well, so veneer surfaces should not be in direct sunlight. To help a surface age evenly, users can periodically move items on their desks so that the entire surface is exposed to an even amount of light over time. In addition to light, extremely high or low humidity is a damaging environmental factor. Herman Miller suggests maintaining a relative humidity of 35-65 percent.

Nice to look at but the wobble is driving me crazy.
There doesn't seem to be a way to not have this horizontally wobble, which means that with the monitor on the desk (attached on its stand or via the arm) will shake as you type, which is unbearable with any ultrawide monitor. The assembly was a breeze, but the easy assembly is quickly forgotten.

I have gone back to a wired mouse, so that it stops falling off the desk when it is reclined.

Really Great Table
It's really great! Amazing storage area for cables, really sturdy, the black area is pretty comfortable and surrounds me when I'm sitting there to work.

I've been looking for a table like this for a long time, and when I saw it, I bought immediately, and I have no regrets!

the best computer desk for me
pros: (1) bodypocket cut in the middle promotes good posture. (2) the sliding action lets me easily adjust the height of the desk throughout the day. (3) the soft urethane surface is comfortable for the forearms. (4) the compact size of the desk is a plus because i have a separate desk for non computer work. (5) looks stylish and has bells and whistles which are useful i.e. casters to move the desk. (6) the envelop desk and the embody chair work well together so that the pair is greater than the sum of the individual parts. the sliding action of the desk to get the comfortable height for a given moment and the embody's recline mechanism let me balance my weight and reduce pressure on forearms and shoulders while keeping me in excellent, reclined posture.

cons: none.

other: the only monitor arm / support that works with this table is the Herman Miller Flo which has a low profile clamp. i regret that i will have to buy an overpriced Flo monitor support when my ergotron arm functions just as well. i don't want to call this a con because other manufacturers should offer a low profile clamps. btw, assembling the desk was 4 easy steps.

A Huge Caveat
This desk is great, but only if you're writing with pen and paper. If you're using a computer, it wobbles continuously as you type. If your monitor is attached to your worksurface with a monitor, the wobble is even more pronounced.

Great for shorter people
This desk is true to its name, as it completely envelops you when configured correctly. For shorter people, in particular, this is indeed a revolutionary product. It is the desk equivalent to sitting in an ergonomic office chair for the first time. Once you correctly configure the Envelop, you realize how much back and shoulder discomfort a standard desk can cause. The caveats that follow are more a product of my enormous satisfaction with the product; I have never spent this much time thinking about a piece of furniture. There could be some improvements. The desk has a tendency to vibrate. If you are a particularly "heavy-handed" typist, this is not the desk for you. The metal tray that is exposed when the desk surface is deployed to its most "rolled down" setting, seems to serve no utilitarian purpose and is unsightly. The designers should make it usable or cover it. Finally, don't lose the thumbscrews! I almost threw them out with the packaging before realizing that they were essential to maintaining a particular desk surface setting. The instructions were not very clear on this point.

How to Clean Desk Surface

Would someone please share tips on how to clean each section of the desk surface? So far I have found it difficult to clean the black plasticky front.
A shopper on Jan 19, 2017
Best Answer: Here is the recommended care and maintenance for the section of the desk you are referring to.

How does the desk accommodate a mouse?

I am concerned about a mouse sliding down when I recline on the desk. Please provide more details about how to use a mouse with the desk.
A shopper on Dec 12, 2016
Best Answer: The front part of the desk, known as the infield section, is made of a soft black urethane. The material gives the desk the grip it needs to keep the user's mouse from rolling off the desk.

*Items placed on the infield portion of the work surface may tip and fall when infield surface is in the reclined position or when the work surface is being moved.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any additional questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.

Tilt angle

How far will the desk tilt? If I put a recliner under it, would it still move with me as tilt further back?
A shopper on May 15, 2016
Best Answer: When the user is seated in a reclined position the Envelop desks surface slides forward 7 inches, allowing it to pivot down 7 degrees to surround the user and support the forearms and wrists.

If you have any other questions, please contact the Herman Miller Store at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com
Weight capacity

I would like to know what's the maximum weight this desk is designed to carry.

I have 20 lb monitor and set of speakers that weigh 50 lb. on my current computer desk. Sadly, I could not find this information in the available brochures or specifications.

Work well with Flo Monitor Support?

Hi,

The description says that Envelop Desk works well with Flo Monitor Support.

Can the desktop be moved when it has the Flo Monitor Support attached to the desk?

The photo with Flo Monitor Support shows the desk without the top slid out. Also, the video shows the top slid out without the Flo Monitor Support.

Thanks,
Ayumi
A shopper on Jul 24, 2015
Best Answer: The Flo Monitor Support would work well with the Envelop desk. You will need the Low Profile Clamp in order to attach the Flo Monitor Support to the desk. The Flo movement was designed to allow you to tilt the screen to the position you need to reduce eyestrain and encourage healthy sitting positions as you touch or view your screen.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
Would the arms of Embody Chair be in the way?

Hi,

I have an Embody Chair with arms. Would they be in the way when used with this Envelop Desk?

The Embody Chair in the video on the product page does not have any arm.

Thanks,
Ayumi
A shopper on Jul 23, 2015
Best Answer: The Embody chair and Envelop Desk are a great combination whether your Embody chair has arms or not. The Embody chair arms adjust from 6.5"-inches to 11.5-inches and can easily be adjusted to allow the user more room if needed.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.

A shopper on Jun 24, 2015

Black Desk Top Material? Envelop Desk

Hello, can you tell me what the black moving portion of the desk is made of? Is it a hard material, or is it soft dense foam like material?
I had a desk at a company that was soft and your elbows would depress into it a bit. It was very helpful and less fatiguing on elbows.
thank you
A shopper on Mar 26, 2015
Best Answer: The Envelop Desk's sliding work surface is comprised of 2 sections; the infield section at the front is a made of black urethane - plastic/rubber material that is softer than laminate, but harder than foam - with a center cutout, the outfield section at the back has a laminate surface with clear plywood edges or a veneer surface with stained plywood edges.
