Divider
Polished Aluminum

For normal cleaning, apply a pre-softened paste wax to polished aluminum components following the manufacturer's instructions. In humid atmospheres near salt water, apply the wax once a month. In other areas, apply wax every three months to maintain the appearance of the aluminum.

Coated Metal

For normal cleaning, wash coated metal surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in detergent and warm water; rinse thoroughly and dry. Remove scuff marks from low-gloss coatings with pre-softened paste wax, following the manufacturer's instructions. Remove scuff marks and scratches from high-gloss coatings using automotive polishing compounds, either liquid or paste. After polishing, apply a pre-softened automotive paste wax to restore original sheen. For assistance in determining the appropriate color and gloss for Herman Miller touch-up paint, contact your Herman Miller Customer Service Representative.

Plastic

For normal cleaning, wash plastic surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasive kitchen cleaners.

Wood & Veneer

This includes Herman Miller products finished with wood veneer or recut wood veneer, except the oiled Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman with Rosewood, Oiled Walnut, or Oiled Santos Palisander veneer unless specifically noted.

Normal Cleaning
Dust regularly with a slightly damp, soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe dry with a dry, soft cloth in the directionof the wood grain.Spills should be immediately wiped up with a damp cloth.

Once a month
Clean the surface with a soft cloth dampened with a quality cleaner formulated for wood furniture. Wipe the surface in the direction of the wood grain to remove dirt and fingerprints. Wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth.

Twice a year
Apply a good quality furniture polish with a soft cloth. Do not use aerosol-powered cleaners or polishes. Also, do not use polishes containing waxes or abrasives, or polishes that are oil based.

Stains
Herman Miller veneers meet strict testing standards for resistance to wear, light, stains, water, and pressure. To reduce the risk of damage, take some precautions: Use coasters for glasses and mugs. If a glass top is added to the veneer surface, be sure it rests on felt pads. Don’t place a potted plant on a veneer surface unless it’s in a water-tight container or in a drip tray.Don’t let vinyl binders stay on a surface for very long. Use protective pads under equipment with “rubber” cushioning feet. Some chemical compounds used in the feet on office equipment, such as printers and monitor stands, may leave permanent stains or marks.

Minor repair of water rings, stains, and scratches
Rub the surface lightly in the direction of the wood grain using No. 000 steel wool. Apply a scratch-removing polish with a color and value that simulate the veneer. If the scratches are deep, consult a professional furniture refinisher.

Other Damage
Wood is susceptible to bruising and scratching from heavy office equipment, so we encourage a protective surface is placed underneath. Objects should be lifted instead of dragged across a surface. Protective pads should be used under items with a rough bottom, like pottery. Denting, caused by extreme pen pressure when writing, can also damage veneer. Use desk pads or some other protection where a lot of paperwork is done. Sunlight can damage veneer as well, so veneer surfaces should not be in direct sunlight. To help a surface age evenly, users can periodically move items on their desks so that the entire surface is exposed to an even amount of light over time. In addition to light, extremely high or low humidity is a damaging environmental factor. Herman Miller suggests maintaining a relative humidity of 35-65 percent.

Oiled Wood & Veneer

This includes the Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman with Rosewood, Oiled Walnut, or Oiled Santos Palisander veneer.

Routine Care
For normal cleaning, dust furniture daily with a slightly damp, soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe dry with a dry, soft cloth in direction of the wood grain. To maintain the oiled veneer, very lightly brush wood areas with a fine Scotchbrite pad moving in the direction of the grain to open the pores of the wood and remove fingerprints and dirt. Never use wax-based products (Pledge, Endust), aerosol-powered cleaners, polishes, waxes, abrasive cleaners, or oily polishes.

Oiled Finish Maintenance
Only apply oil when the product looks dry.

To oil Eames product wood parts, prepare the product prior to applying the oil:
Rub the entire surface with No. 000 steel wool in the direction of the grain to remove small surface mars, light scratches, and any build-up from previous oiling. Improve the appearance of deep scratches nicks by sanding the wood veneer lightly with no. 360 grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain. Use caution on veneered surfaces to avoid sanding through the veneer. Apply small amount of gunstock (boiled linseed or tung) oil to a clean, soft, cotton cloth. Wipe small sections at a time in direction of grain using a circular motion until the entire veneer is coated. Be sure to apply oil to all exposed edges of the veneer.

NOTE: Only apply oil on veneer surfaces.
Immediately wipe off any oil that makes contacts with leather, plastic, or metal parts. Wipe off excess oil with a clean, soft, dry cotton cloth and smooth in the direction of the grain. Within 10 minutes, rub again with a soft dry, clean cloth until the entire surface is dry. After about three hours, polish with a soft dry, clean cloth. Allow the oil to dry for 24 hours before sitting in it to avoid transfer to clothing. As the oil builds over time, the period between applications will extend. Only apply oil when the product looks dry.

NOTE: Properly dispose of rags used with oil as they can accidentally combust. Rinse oily rags with water and hang over a line to allow air to get to all fibers.

Fabric

For normal cleaning, vacuum upholstery fabric using an upholstery attachment. If further cleaning is needed, dry-clean or spot clean fabric with solvent cleaner.

Do not brush fabric or use a vacuum attachment with a rotary brush. Brushing may permanently damage the nap or change the character of the fabric.

Do not apply water or any liquid solution. Wetting the fabric with any liquid solution may result in permanent damage.

Leather

For normal cleaning, vacuum or dust frequently with a clean, dry cloth. If leather is soiled, it can be wiped with a damp soft cloth and a lather of any mild soap and a minimum amount of lukewarm water. Do not spot clean leather; clean the entire surface. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry with a clean, soft cloth.

For spots and spills, wipe excess liquid immediately with a clean cloth or sponge; let the leather air dry. If the spot is still visible, further cleaning may be necessary. Sponge the entire surface—seat, back, or chair arm—with clean, lukewarm water. Let the leather air dry; never use a hair dryer or other heat source to dry leather.

For stubborn spots and stains, apply a mild, nonabrasive soap solution with a clean, wet sponge. Rinse well and let air dry. For butter, oil, or grease, wipe the leather with a clean, dry cloth and let the remainder of the oil dissipate into the leather. Do not apply water or try to wash a grease spot.

Do not use saddle soap, cleaning solvents, oils, furniture polishes, varnishes, abrasive cleaners, detergents, or ammonia on leather; they will ruin the finish, causing it to become sticky and cracked.

Fabulous, fantastic, flawless
Love love love it. I purchased a tall in classic colors, black and walnut. My home is mid-century modern and this piece tops it off. So comfy, classic and beautiful, no wonder it’s been selling like crazy since 1956.

Fabulous. Everyone knows it
My options were ‘tall’, MCL leather and pallisander shell. The chair is exquisite. Looks fabulous, really comfortable, and it puts a smile on my face to know it’s there waiting for me at home. It’s not so much a status symbol, but an acknowledgement to myself that I am now an original owner of this classic icon.

There are so many options to help you decide I’ll throw this in - the shell may not be something you see a lot. The difference between walnut, oiled walnut etc will matter only if the positioning will draw your eye to the shell. (The black ebony/ash is a different proposition). The standard leather is fabulous. The upgraded is fabulous and thicker, so it’s stiffer. The ‘tall’ adds 2 inches for the back of your head and feels wider too.

I think I’ll get another. A classic, standard black leather over walnut. Then I can choose which between the tall and classic as the mood strikes!

A Timeless Classic
I purchased my Eames Chair in the year 2000, and it still looks like the day it arrived.
Many believe, and I am one of those, that see this as a timeless piece of art.

Glad I purchased the Tall !
I consider myself a design purist so was a bit hesitant to purchase the Tall Eames Lounge and Ottoman. So happy I did! The scale looks just right and it supports my head! I went with the 9N Santos Palisander which is exquisite and unique. This is a piece that will get better with age.

Outstanding comfort and quality!
This is one of the most comfortable chairs I have ever used. I opted for the MCL leather - it has a slightly matt finish and looks more very dark grey that black compared to my top grain leather sofa in black leather. The MCL is very soft and buttery and is already (only a week of use) developing some character. I replaced a rather tattered leather chair and was slightly concerned that the Eames might seem large and imposing but it is actually quite small and does not dominate the room at all. The ottoman is very solid and makes a good place for a tray when it is not being used as part of the lounge arrangement. Overall I would rate this as a top quality product and good value for money. Delivery was also very easy - it took all of 2 minutes to set up.

Like new, and just 40 years old!
My design office hired a designer from Herman Miller nearly 40 years ago, and thought to have him bring me a chair and ottoman straight put of the factory employees store. Black leather with oiled rosewood veneer.
It has survived (2) kids and (7) grand kids, and still looks and feels like new.

Well designed; well made
I had put off this purchase for a couple of years. The price was a bit high and I thought the product may have been over-hyped; that the set may be pretty to look at but lacking in comfort. I am glad to report I was wrong. It is very comfortable and my favorite chair for hours of reading or watching television. Heirloom quality. Completely satisfied with my purchase.

Chair Collapsed After Average Usage
My Eames chair was unquestionably my favorite reading chair. Which is why I am so distraught to be writing this negative review. I bought my chair about 10 years ago, and it served me faithfully until yesterday. I didn't plop down on the chair. I wasn't getting up. I was reading. Just sitting. When CRACK!!! The back rest broke free from the seat and I fell over backwards onto the floor. The failure point was where the arm rest was defectively glued to the seat. And once it gave way the left side simultaneously fractured at another glue point. You can see the result in the pictures taken moments after my fall. It disturbs me greatly that such an expensive chair would literally break apart after a few years of day-to-day usage.

Comfortable chair to come home to
Comfort level is very good. Design is good though it probably fits a man better than a woman.

Stickers and decals

Do the lounge chair and ottoman come with the Herman Miller round metal decal and the stickers?
A shopper on Jan 2, 2012
Best Answer: Yes, the Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman has a medallion that can be found on the underside of the chair. Most other Eames products also have the same medallion to signify them as an authentic Herman Miller Eames product. Attached is an example of what the medallion looks like.

If there is anything else we can help with, please feel free to contact Herman Miller Customer Care at 888.798.0202.
Does the Eames Lounge chair seat back support the neck of a 6' tall man?
A shopper on Oct 27, 2013
Best Answer: The Eames Lounge Chair has a height of 24 inches from the top of the seat cushion to the top of the seat back. For most men over 6 feet, the seat back supports them up to their shoulders in a lounging position, however, does not support the neck.

Please give us a call at 800.798.0202 if you have additional questions or if there is anything else we can help with.
Is there an option to get this chair in a fabric material like cord?
A shopper on Sep 25, 2011
Best Answer: We do not currently have plans to offer the Eames Lounge & Ottoman with a fabric option like Cord, but we appreciate your suggestion. The Eames Lounge & Ottoman chairs made today stay true to the original design by Charles and Ray Eames in 1956. Over the years we have made slight changes to provide the best possible product while still honoring the design heritage. The chair's original design included an aniline leather, and we now offer a new MCL leather, which provides the same softness of the original leather, along with durability and color-fastness.

Where are the Eames Lounge Chairs & Ottomans assembled and where are their parts manufactured? Where does the leather come from?

I'm interested to know what the origin of the materials for these iconic chairs are. Thanks in advance!
A shopper on Dec 8, 2011
Best Answer: The Eames Lounge & Ottoman is handcrafted in West Michigan. The wood chosen for the veneer shell and inner plies comes from different areas in the US and Canada, depending on which species you select. Once the wood is brought to West Michigan, it is processed and the veneer is evaluated to ensure that it is high quality. All veneer parts for each Eames Lounge & Ottoman are taken from the same tree so you have a consistent wood grain within your chair. The look of the wood grain varies from chair to chair because they are made from different trees, which makes each chair unique.

Leather for the Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman comes from Austria, and is hand selected once it reaches West Michigan to ensure quality. The assembly of the wood shell pieces, hand selected leather and assembly components takes place in West Michigan. Each leather-covered cushion is upholstered individually by hand.

Since first launching the chair in 1956, Herman Miller has been very careful to make sure the chair you order now performs as beautifully as the original. We recently re-launched the hand oiled version of the Eames Lounge & Ottoman in Walnut and Santos Palisander to match the look and feel of the original chair and ottoman. Each veneer piece is hand oiled over a series of a few days before the chair is fully assembled.
I'd like further info on the difference between the regular veneered surface and the oiled finished surface. Is it simply a matter of the finish?
A shopper on Mar 17, 2012
Best Answer: Our standard finish is an oil-based lacquer, which is how we have been finishing the Eames Lounge and Ottoman for many decades. It is a finishing process that has been created and tested so our chairs will maintain their quality over time, with only dusting needed to maintain the finish. Our veneer options of Walnut Veneer and Santos Palisander Veneer have our standard finish.

Our original Eames Lounge and Ottoman was created with a hand oiled finish, which is an option that some of our customers have been longing for. Over the years, we re-introduced the original Santos Palisander Veneer (an environmentally friendlier version of the original Brazilian Rosewood), which brought back much of the original character of the chair. The remaining ingredient for customers who want to purchase a chair that closely replicates the original look was to bring back the hand oiled finish.

For each chair that we create with this finish, our team in Michigan hand oils the veneer pieces over the course of several days before the chair is assembled. The hand oiled finish requires a little more care for the owner and has a lower sheen than our standard finish. With the hand oiled finish, you will need to re-oil in the first few years and be careful not to use wax based dusting products. We offer the hand oiled finish both as Oiled Walnut and Oiled Santos Palisander.

Both veneer finish options make a beautiful chair, so we leave the choice up to you so you can pick the option that best fits your style. If there is anything else we can help with, please give us a call at 888.798.0202.
Fire compliance stickers

My ELO from DWR came with fire compliance stickers on the palisander veneer (on the bottom). I peeled the corner of one of the stickers and it left a sticky residue. Are the stickers meant to be left on the veneer? Should I peel them off? If so, what should I use to remove the sticker residue?
A shopper on May 16, 2017
Best Answer: The product labels are not recommend to be removed. They are placed on our products to provide customers with valuable information. If you have already removed your product stickers, I would suggest using a damp cloth and rubbing softly in circular motions.

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.
Shock mount durability

Hi, I've seen that with older chairs there can be issues with the shock mount holding the chair detaches from the frame causing the whole chair to collapse. Have there been design improvements in recent chairs to minimize this problem? If not, what is the best way to minimize this problem?

Thanks!
A shopper on Feb 10, 2017
Best Answer: While we do occasionally get reports of broken shock mounts - typically on older chairs -- we are happy to report that the vast majority of chairs will provide decades of use and will be heirlooms that can last for generations with proper care. As is the case with most furniture, the chair's ultimate life will depend on usage, environment, care & maintenance and other factors. The shock mounts, the adhesives, and even the plywood in the chair itself will all degrade with time and may break/peel away from the chair or the laminations of the plywood may separate at the mounting point. In many cases, broken shock mounts can be repaired allowing the chair to remain in service, thereby extending its useful life.

Depending on the age of your chair, there could be several changes or improvements in the chair design, materials used and/or manufacturing processes that extend the life of the chair. We recommend keeping the chair in a controlled environment (avoiding excessive heat, humidity and exposure to direct sunlight) which is helpful in maintaing the integrity of the chair. Avoiding misuse by children and/or use by users over the 300 lbs weight limit will also be helpful in extending the product's life. We recommend occasional and routine inspection of the chair to look for any loose fasteners, loosening or partial disbonding (pull-away) of the mounts and/or plywood delamination of the chair frame especially near the shock mounts. Routine inspection will be helpful in preventing total "collapse" of the chair or other serious damage that might prevent repair of the chair.

In what year did Herman Miller quit making the Eames Lounge in Rosewood?

Please contact the Herman Miller Store if you have any further questions at 888-798-0202 or hmstore@hermanmiller.com.

Best Answer: Cushions and arm pads can be replaced or recovered*. When we recover any part of the chair/ottoman, we replace the leather and backer with a new zipper retaining their original interior material. Additional filler is added when needed at no extra charge. The backer (back fiber) on a cushion can be replaced without replacing the leather. This includes a new zipper.

any test to tell the difference between hand oiled and oil lacquer spray?

I just received a gorgeous Eames lounge chair and ottoman in palisander for my 40th anniversary. To me it appears to be the hand oiled palisander but I'm not quite sure. Is there any test I can do to see if it's the regular version or the hand oiled version?
A shopper on Jun 27, 2016
Best Answer: The sure way to tell the finish of the chair would be to look at the production sticker located underneath the chair. There should be a long code that starts with ES. If the code contains 5D it would be Oiled Santos Palisander and if it reads 9N it would be Santos Palisander. There is also a visual difference. The Oiled Santos Palisander would have a sheen to it whereas the non-oiled would have a matte, dull finish.

What is the stamp behind the cushions?

We recently inherited an old Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. After taking the cushions off to prepare to send them back to the Herman Miller factory for reupholstering, we noticed "623" stamped on each section of the chair. Is this the serial number or something else?
A shopper on Mar 30, 2016
Best Answer: When going through the manufacturing process the wood panels are grain matched and travel down the line together. The number stamped on all the panels helps if one of the panels happens to get separated.

Best Answer: Herman Miller would recommend users who are 5 feet 8 inches or taller to select the Tall size of the Eames Lounge Chair. For users who are below 5 feet 8 inches, Herman Miller would recommend selecting the Classic size.

Reattaching button cover

One of the leather covered metal button covers popped off the button base (attached to the cushion). Is there a way to reattach it with taking the whole chair to an authorized repair shop?
