Kaiju Studios, based in Providence, Rhode Island, was founded in 2001 by two graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design—Cutter Hutton and Ayako Takase. Another RISD alumnus, Chris Specce, joined the group later. Like many of the designers we work with, Takase and Hutton were looking for design freedom, the ability to work on "anything we wanted, from products to graphics to websites."
They've certainly achieved that goal in the decade since. Along with home office furniture, including the Airia Desk and Media Cabinet, Kaiju has put its design stamp on razors and cosmetics containers, desk organizers, a kitchen computer, and numerous web sites and graphics campaigns. "When I'm designing, I always think about the people who will be using the products," Takase says. "I feel a responsibility to give them what they want and need, not necessarily what they expect."
