Designer Carol Catalano is diminutive, but her list of achievements is anything but. The Boston designer has won numerous awards since opening her design studio in 1987. While her projects are often highly technical (audio speakers and other consumer electronics), she enjoyed the playful process that produced the Capelli Stool.
Catalano has made a commitment to include much more thinking about the user's experience in her designs. "It's much different now than when I first started out," she says. "It used to be about just creating a good design. Now the first thing I think about in any project is how I can simplify and enrich people's lives." Example: Catalano, who loves to cook, recently designed a line of knives, manufactured by Dexter Russell, for people with arthritis. The knives have soft handles and can be gripped in several ways without losing cutting power.
